Operating System War: Microsoft Verse Apple

Published by techspotlight under Software Edit This

The ailing economy has really put a damper on computer sales over the past several months.  Consumers are turning to the new Netbooks which are tiny notebooks that are smaller, lighter, less powerful and most of all cheaper computers.  In February 2009, the OS statistics for the first time led to Windows having picked up ground in several years which has been continually falling since Apple’s brilliant return.  Even though the Mac OS suffered for the first time, this month it is back on track and gained more market share, taking approximately .2% away from Windows and the free OS Linux grabbing .1% from Windows.  Users still love their Apple’s and it continues to drive previous Windows users away, even though their computers are much more expensive.

Please be aware that these percentages are based on consumers and businesses, not including servers.  The actual figures and data are provided by Global Market Share Statistics and their website can be viewed here.

Operating System March 2009 February 2009 January 2009
WINDOWS 88.1% 88.4% 88.2%
MAC 9.7% 9.6% 9.9%
LINUX 0.9% 0.8% 0.8%
