The Windows Vista Power Button

Published by techspotlight at 12:05 am under Windows Vista Edit This

All versions of Windows Vista includes the ability to change how the power button acts when it is clicked.  With all previous versions of Windows the button acted as a gateway to other options like restart and shut down.  Microsoft has completely changed the function and makes it easier for the user using only one click.

The default for the power button or lid as it is commonly referred to, is to go into Sleep mode.  Sleep mode keeps your computer running but idles down into a lower power consumption state.  Sleep mode is also known as Standby mode.

The power button is changeable to a total of 3 options including Sleep, Hibernate and Shut Down.  Most keyboards have a Sleep or Standby button which is easier and widely used over the software control.  Many people will want to change the default from Sleep to another option.  To do this follow these instructions.

  1. Right click on the desktop and select Personalize.
  2. Select the third option on the right, Screen Saver.
  3. Select Change power settings.
  4. Select Change plan settings below the selected preferred plan.
  5. Select Change advanced power settings.
  6. Click on the plus mark (+) next to Power buttons and lid.
  7. Click on the plus mark (+) next to Start menu power button.
  8. Choose one of the 3 options you desire.
  9. Press OK on all open windows.

    Sounds,
It’s easier in the aspect as once the button is setup, it only takes one click and the chosen option will happen immediately.

I have to agree with you though, it is a pain navigating through all the windows to get to one option.

“…The default for the power button or lid as it is commonly referred to…”

The start menu button is never called the “lid”, I believe that is referring to the lid of a laptop computer. In other words, the action when you close the lid of the laptop.

This tip is rubbish, how complicated? This is the problem with Vista, so many clicks to do simple things.

How is this easier? I like Vista standby mode… freaking awesome… in S3 sleep mode it goes in near shutdown-mode in 1 second and powers-on in 2 seconds.. Plus that is TOTAL SILENT.. if the poweron light on the computer case would not be lit then I WOULD NOT KNOW IT IS OPEN. LOVE IT!!

I also like and use the sleep mode, it’s very convenient for working at home, going away from the computer frequently - for unknown amount of time…
