The Windows Vista Power Button

All versions of Windows Vista includes the ability to change how the power button acts when it is clicked.  With all previous versions of Windows the button acted as a gateway to other options like restart and shut down.  Microsoft has completely changed the function and makes it easier for the user using only one click.

The default for the power button or lid as it is commonly referred to, is to go into Sleep mode.  Sleep mode keeps your computer running but idles down into a lower power consumption state.  Sleep mode is also known as Standby mode.

The power button is changeable to a total of 3 options including Sleep, Hibernate and Shut Down.  Most keyboards have a Sleep or Standby button which is easier and widely used over the software control.  Many people will want to change the default from Sleep to another option.  To do this follow these instructions.

  1. Right click on the desktop and select Personalize.
  2. Select the third option on the right, Screen Saver.
  3. Select Change power settings.
  4. Select Change plan settings below the selected preferred plan.
  5. Select Change advanced power settings.
  6. Click on the plus mark (+) next to Power buttons and lid.
  7. Click on the plus mark (+) next to Start menu power button.
  8. Choose one of the 3 options you desire.
  9. Press OK on all open windows.
