Search Engine Market Share

Published by techspotlight at 12:05 am under Internet Edit This

It’s not surprising that Google has rapped up this market with their famous search engine.  Google is so dominant that if your website or blog doesn’t appear in the Google listings, then your site is basically unknown to the world.  Being a top tiered search engine draws in tons of advertising revenue for the company.

Google has almost picked up another 4% this year compared to their ending results of 75.99% in 2007.  If the trend keeps continuing, Google will end up with over 90% market share in 5 years.

The actual figures and data are provided by Global Market Share Statistics, and you can view their website here.  The figures represent data accumulated from computer users worldwide from January 1, 2008 to September 1, 2008.

  1. 79.03% Google
  2. 11.58% Yahoo
  3. 3.46% MSN
  4. 2.27% AOL
  5. 1.54% Microsoft Live
  6. 1.13% Ask
  7. 0.09% AltaVista
  8. 0.04% Excite
  9. 0.01% All The Web
  10. 0.01% Lycos

Wow, no wonder my high-ranked site on MSN doesn’t get many hits… I still prefer the metasearch engines like Search.com and Info.com; it’s surprising that none of them makes it into the top ten - not even Dogpile.
