Available PC Blu-Ray Drives

Published by techspotlight under Hardware Edit This

Since Blu-Ray has now become the standard for the High Definition disc player, I thought I would make you aware of what is available for the computer.  The very first question you should ask is do I really need a Blu-Ray drive for my computer.  For the mass majority there is no need for this drive unless you intend to watch Blu-Ray movies on your computer.  A lot of people have stated it is a good backup source and that is just pure hogwash.  Even with the price of drives falling, the blank discs themselves still cost from $15-$20 each.  One small burning mistake or coaster and the disc will be useless not to mention the time it takes to actually burn 25 gigabytes of data.  Also remember that your monitor and video card must be able to support DHCP (Copy Protection) or Blu-Ray movies will not even playback in high definition.  You also need special software like the newest PowerDVD by Cyberlink that supports Blu-Ray.  If you are an enthusiast or just need the latest devices then inevitably the choice is yours and this is why I wanted to let you know just some of what is available and the current list prices.

Manufacturer Model Number List Price
LG GGW-H20L  $279.99
Lite-On  DH-4B1S-08  $399.99
Pioneer  BDR-202BK  $399.99
Sony  BWU-200S  $559.99
As with any newer technology the prices will more than likely continue to drop and could make it more feasible for the Blu-Ray burner to enter your home computer system.  As a side note there are Blu-Ray ROM Drives available now also that will only read Blu-Ray discs but not write to them and they currently are in the range of $150-$200.
